PREPARE FOR WINTER SKINCARE

October 12, 2015

Winter is on its way, and let’s face it—it’s not that great for your skin. Harsh winds, cold temperatures, and dry air tend to sap skin of its natural oils, leaving it dry, red, and irritated. During winter when harsh conditions can be drying, it’s important to keep skin healthy and nourished. Here are a few basic skincare steps for winter we can follow to help nourish and protect our skin.

FACE

CLEANSE: Soap, synthetic detergents, and harsh ingredients present in over-the-counter cleansers can rob skin of necessary moisture, and damage the epidermal layer of skin. Choose gentler, more natural and moisturizing  cleansers that will hold moisture in the skin. Try our Shea Cleansing Balm or Rhassoul Exfoliating Cleanser that are milder for dry, sensitive, or damaged skin. If you have normal or oily skin foaming cleansers and clays work well, try our gentle Rhassoul or Charcoal Complexion Bars packed with Rhasoul Clay and Activated Charcoal. Oil cleansers can benefit all skin types and our Deep Cleansing Oil can gently restore, balance, and cleanse your skin, while providing a spa-like experience.

TONE: The intention of a Toner is to shrink the pores, rejuvenate and moisturize skin, some toners on the market can be drying and harsh for sensitive skin due to alcohol and witch hazel content. Hydrosols are milder for the skin than astringent toners to gently balance and rejuvenate the skin, while vitamins and minerals nourish, making them great for all skin types. Try our Rose Hydrosol Face Mist to help tighten pores and reduce the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles, great for dry, sensitive, mature or damaged skin. Our Lavandin Hydrosol Mist is great for oily or acneic skin as it calms and reduces inflammation and redness. Our Hydrosols also make for a refreshing spritzer anytime throughout the day.

HYDRATE:  In small doses, oils can make skin radiant. Face serums are light and fast absorbing, a few drops is more than enough to pat onto skin giving it the nourishment and moisture it needs without clogging pores.  Serums contain a much higher proportional concentration of active ingredients and leave out water and many of the heavier ingredients that are found in traditional moisturizers, however, they can be used alone or in addition to creme or lotion moisturizers if you choose. Try our Face and Eye Serums are made with luxurious blends of concentrated radiance-boosting oils to repair, brighten, and encourage skin hydration and regeneration. Light enough to use as a makeup primer.

EXFOLIATE: Getting rid of the top layer of skin helps reduce dry, flakes and allows other products to penetrate and make-up to glide onto face giving a smoother appearance.  Face exfoliantes should be milder than body scrubs and not damage or tear the epidermal tissue. Using ingredients that are safe and gentle is key. Try our Herbal Face Polish made of shea butter, gentle powders and enzymatic papaya oil, or our water-activated Buffing Grains made of organic grains and pure botanicals to gently exfoliate your skin. Use 1-3 times a week, depending on your skin’s needs.

DETOX: Face masks are the perfect skin care treatment to help you with your skin care concerns. The right face mask can help hydrate skin, remove excess oils, pull out impurities, and help improve the appearance of your pores. Not to mention the feeling of being pampered like you’re at a spa from the comfort of your own home! Feed your face and try one of our fruit and vegetable face masks at least a couple times a week, and follow with our skin drenching Face Serum.

BODY

CLEANSE: Typically handmade soap is made of vegetable oils and butters that are rich in antioxidants, vitamins and nutrients essential for healthy skin. Handblended soap ingredients are gentler on the skin and retain  glycerin to moisturize, in comparison to "traditional" store bought soaps that remove glycerin creating a drying effect on the skin. Try our plant based all natural vegan soap, it is formulated for sensitive skin, using organic gentle moisturizing ingredients for all skin types, even babies! Our moisturizing soap is beneficial for body, mind and soul, as our essential oils create an aromatherapy bar as well. So indulge and turn your bathroom into your very own spa with a bar of R.A.D Bath and Body vegan bath soap.

BODY SCRUB: While we know that facial exfoliation is part of our daily beauty routine, a body scrub provides a variety of benefits. From helping our moisturizer absorb better, to increased relaxation, incorporating a grainy friend into our shower routine, could be the best kept secret. A good scrub stimulates blood circulation, helps drain lymph nodes, and detoxifies your body internally leaving our skin smooth, detoxed and moisturized. Try our Demerara Sugar Scrub or Himalayan Salt Scrub adding these hard working vegan scrubs to your beauty routine can help maintain smooth, nourished, healthy skin and no need for a post shower moisturizer if you choose!

MOISTURIZE: Keeping your skin balanced, hydrated and protected in cooler weather can be challenging. Body Oils and Butters are humectants and formulated to seal in moisture, and composed primarily of oils and butters. Many of these natural oils and butters can penetrate the surface of the skin to help nourish and condition, the result is skin that is visibly smoother and silky soft. Try our Shea Coconut Body Butter or Skin Remedy Body Butter made with rich organic, raw plant based butters to combat winter skin and provide the skin a good supply of essential fatty acids protecting it from the blustery cold winds of winter.

Another great moisturizer for the skin is Body Oil. Oil can be effective during cooler months, protecting the skin’s lipid barrier and are great at preventing moisture from evaporating. Try our fast absorbing, light

Herb Infused Body Oil made with raw, organic cold-pressed plant oils rich with vitamins, minerals, and antioxidants that increase elasticity while hydrating and revitalizing dry or sun damaged skin.

Remember to drink plenty of water, up your intake of Omega-3 fats, take shorter showers without the use of  hot, hot water, moisturize at night with balms and butters, socks and oversized bathrobes, keep your home warm and use a humidifier if necessary and you will be telling Old Man Winter to bring it on!
