Clear, glowing, dewy-looking skin, free of blackheads, pimples, cysts, and other imperfections seems to be an elusive goal for some. There are so many personal care products on the market, how are we to decifer those that work from those that don't. Many Mainstream skincare products on the market are not as helpful for our skin as they may promise. Some leaving our largest organ trying to repair itself by replacing the oil that their products stripped away. This sets up a cycle of tight and dry skin, followed by the inevitable oil slick, as our skin trys to compensate for the loss of natural oil. Mainstream moisturizers that are 80% water-based further perpetuate the dry skin cycle with continual use. We suffer with the anxiety that rises when yet another dry patch materializes, or another pimple flares up or another painful lump begins forming beneath the skin, sending many into overdrive in an attempt to counteract the impending damage. Does the panicked scrubbing, disinfecting, and overdrying ever work? The cycle seems endless. It's exhausting. It's painful. It's embarrassing. It's expensive!
The truth is many of the ingredients in common skincare products and cosmetics are in fact quite toxic. The commercial skincare industry continues to use ingredients that are not necessary for the skin to thrive; for example, formaldehyde—the same carcinogenic chemical used to preserve animal specimens in laboratories—is a common unlisted ingredient in “fragrance” or “parfum,” which you will find in almost every big name skincare product, shampoo and conditioner you find on store shelves. In those same products, you will often find endocrine disprupters thatb mimic estrogen called parabens used as preservatives to extend shelf life, that have been linked to breast cancer. Some toxic chemicals are used as preservatives in water-based products. Others improve color, texture or shelf-life of self-care products. Others facilitate the skin’s absorption of “active ingredients,” including toxins that are along for the ride. Even many incredibly expensive dermatologist-developed products contain toxins and hormone disruptors. Many companies develop skincare products as though the skin were somehow isolated from the rest of the body, which couldn’t be further from the truth.
After doing considerable research, as a Nurse Practitioner certified in Complimentary and Integrative Therapies, I became increasingly frustrated at how difficult it was to find safe, non-toxic skincare products for my family in order to heal their skin ailments and thus R.A.D Bath + Body was born.
If we nourish and protect our skin inside and outside, it will repair itself, regulate itself, and become healthier and more resilient. In all R.A.D Bath + Body products, the core concept is providing the best possible food— nourishment—protection for the skin. Our products are made of the highest quality plant-based ingredients, safe + free of toxins, preservatives, and harsh chemicals, specially formulated to soothe, heal and protect the skin. Instead of stripping your skin of oil we provide it with nourishing rich plant oils, butters, concentrated vegetables, fruits and botanicals for it to moisturize, and repair damaged sensitive skin. We believe in the power of nature.
That means using ingredients from responsibly sourced, small organic farms and keeping our Safe Cosmetics Pledge: no toxins, no chemical preservatives, no hormone disruptors. It means using the correct form of each ingredient, the form most easily absorbed and used by our skin cells. It means including only necessary ingredients, nothing more, nothing less. It means handblending and selling our products in small batches, not supersized quantities, to keep the ingredients fresh, concentrated, and potent, using only essential oils and anhydrous formulations to override preservatives, and keep our products healthy and safe, leaving out what your skin does'nt need, and we never test on animals because they are not interested in using our products.
If we want to enhance the natural tone, texture, hydration, color and overall youthful appearance of our skin then we have to make better choices regarding the products we use. Allowing mainstream skincare companies to understand what we will tolerate as a consumer and what we wont using our buying power, this sends a message for them not to use carcinogens, hormone disruptors or toxic chemicals in our skin care products.
Knowledge is power--Read The Label-- and support safer companies that are working hard to keep toxic chemicals out of products, people, and the environment. Because properly functioning skin should be beautiful, clear, and healthy and not full of unnecessary toxins, that's the R.A.D Bath + Body way!
